# SynthIDDetector.org — product facts

## What it is

A web tool for checking whether an image was likely made with Google AI or another generator. Drop in a JPG, PNG or WebP (up to 10 MB), or paste from the clipboard.

## What it checks

1. **Content Credentials (C2PA)** — reads the signed provenance manifest in the browser. Google's image and video models sign output as "Google LLC" (app "Google Media Processing Services") with `digitalSourceType: trainedAlgorithmicMedia`; the manifest can also declare a SynthID watermark.
2. **AI metadata** — reads IPTC `DigitalSourceType`, XMP `CreatorTool`, EXIF `Software` and PNG text chunks in the browser.
3. **Pixel-level AI scan** — a signed-in, credit-based scan that inspects the pixels themselves, so it still works when credentials were stripped by a screenshot or social re-upload. Reports an AI probability and, when available, a likely generator family.

## What it does not do

- It does not read or verify the SynthID watermark itself. Only Google's SynthID Detector (https://synthid.com) can do that; when signals point to Google AI, this tool links there to confirm.
- It does not prove an image is real. "Nothing found" means no signal was detected, which also happens when credentials were stripped.
- It does not claim accuracy percentages.

## Status

- Credential and metadata checks: available, free, no sign-in, file stays in the browser.
- Pixel-level AI image scan: live; requires sign-in and 5 credits per image. Video scanning is planned.

## Privacy

- Credential and metadata checks run locally in the browser — the file is not uploaded.
- The pixel scan sends the file to the detection service; files are not published or used for training.
